Our Mission
The Children’s Discovery Center provides a creative learning environment with unique hands-on experiences for people of all ages to share in the joy of play, exploration and inquiry.
We are committed to providing opportunities to youth and families in rural areas, ensuring access to enriching educational experiences that spark curiosity, foster growth, and build a foundation for lifelong learning.
Who We Are
The Children's Discovery Center, a 501(c)(3), is an emerging children's museum in Breckenridge, MN, a rural agriculture community on the North Dakota border, and we are dedicated to providing a creative and enriching environment for young minds.
A group of local moms has come together to address the gaps in our community that affect children and families. We recognize the need for a dedicated space where kids from rural areas have access to enriching and educational opportunities where they can explore, learn, and play. We envision a children's museum that not only enriches the lives of area families, but also serves as a catalyst for revitalizing the area. This facility will contribute to economic growth by supporting local businesses, attracting new visitors, and encouraging potential newcomers to settle in our vibrant community. By fostering a nurturing environment for children, we aim to create a positive ripple effect that benefits everyone in our region.
We’re particularly proud that our exhibits will focus on agriculture, local industry and reflect the region, alongside a strong emphasis on STEM to enhance science and math opportunities for youth.
We are excited to share that we have secured the old Cinema 6 movie theater in downtown Breckenridge. This is thanks to Wilkin County who generously donated the money to purchase the building and has awarded us a matching grant of up to one million dollars to kickstart our campaign. With this support, we are moving forward with our fundraising efforts for the museum’s development and construction.
We have also received several grants from the state of Minnesota that allow us to begin planning our programming this year. This has also accelerated our fundraising efforts so we can begin construction on our building and build the needed support to develop a children’s museum.
Establishing our project downtown is crucial for revitalizing the area, breathing new life into our community, and supporting local businesses. We are just getting started and need your help to turn this space into a hands-on learning adventure for kids.
